How to create pawsome flower collars for your furry friends

Garden Day isn’t complete without loved ones around to share your joy. For some lucky people that includes a furry family member or two.

Primp your pet on Garden Day with a fresh home-made flower collar. They’re easy to create, beautiful to behold, and can be made to match your own flower crown, ensuring your four-legged friends are part of your Garden Day celebrations.

You’ll need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Rope string
  • Hot glue gun
  • Floral tape
  • Fresh flowers
  • Decorative ribbon
  • DIY materials

Step 1

Get your furry friend to sit still by bribing it with treats so you can you measure their neck. Be sure you leave some breathing room so the collar isn’t too tight… you should be able to comfortably fit two fingers between the tape and the neck. Then, add a few inches on the end for tying.

Step 2

Lay your rope string out to match the length measured in step one. Then cut five pieces of string, all the same length. Double check your measurements before wrapping a piece around your pet’s neck to make sure it’s not too tight.

Step 3

Lay the strings side by side to create a single piece, then use a hot glue gun to paste them all together.

If you want a more convenient collar, you can glue these string pieces onto an existing pet collar with a plastic clasp. Just make sure it’s thin enough for your rope string to cover the entire width, then get creative later with flower placements to hide the snap.

Step 4

Take your fresh flowers and trim each stem until they’re only one to two inches long.

Note: When choosing your flowers, check with your vet to ensure none of them are potentially poisonous if ingested.

Step 5

Create little bundles of flowers and wrap the stems together with floral tape. Make sure you’re satisfied with the way each bundle looks before taping them.

Step 6

Begin attaching your flower bundles to the collar by placing them against the collar piece and wrapping more floral tape around the stems and the collar in one go.

Step 7

Continue wrapping the flower bundles in place on the collar until you are satisfied with the look.

Step 8

Now it’s time to add your personal embellishments. You could take a decorative ribbon and glue it to any gap in the collar or, if you’ve chosen to use an existing collar, hide the clasp with some floral finery.

Step 9

Once you are satisfied with the look, tie it onto your furry friend, take a pic, post it and tag #GardenDayUK
